Name: Mosasaurus

Named By: Dollo - 1889.

Diet: Carnivore.

Size: Depending upon the species, Mosasaur could range between 6 to possibly just under 14 meters in length.

Known locations: Fossil locations suggest a worldwide distribution, but are especially well-known from Europe and North America.

Time period: Campanian to Maastrichtian of the Cretaceous.

Mosasaurs were the biggest lizards to ever exist, reaching lengths near 60 feet with skulls stretching 6 feet! These fierce swimmers dominated the seas with long, powerful bodies built for a snake-like slither and a finned tail to speed through water. Steering with webbed feet, they ruled the oceans during the late Cretaceous period, from roughly 96 to 65 million years ago. As ruthless carnivores, mosasaurs hunted fish, turtles, sea urchins, and shellfish. Coexisting with dinosaurs, they vanished in the mass extinction that ended the Cretaceous era.
