Cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) were an extinct species of bear that lived around 24,000 years ago. They are called cave bears because the majority of their fossils have been found in caves, and their scientific name comes from the Latin word for cave. Unlike modern bears, cave bears likely spent much of their lives dwelling in caves, not only during hibernation, making these sheltered environments central to their survival.
These enormous bears have long captured human imagination. The discovery of their huge skulls and teeth often led early explorers to believe they were uncovering the remains of dragons, and in some regions, caves with many cave bear fossils became known as “dragon caves.”
Despite their intimidating size and teeth, cave bears were primarily herbivores. While they may have eaten meat occasionally, their diet mainly consisted of tough vegetation such as leaves, grasses, and roots. Fossil evidence, especially from their teeth, provides valuable insight into their feeding habits, behavior, and the ecology of Ice Age Europe and Asia.
