Borealosuchus emerged from a taxonomic reorganization of the genus Leidysuchus, which had accumulated numerous species of uncertain validity. Four former Leidysuchus species were reclassified as Borealosuchus, with additional species subsequently identified. This mid-sized crocodilian reached impressive proportions, with B. acutidentatus specimens exceeding 280 centimeters in total length and featuring skulls approaching 36 centimeters. Notably, Borealosuchus persisted through the K-T extinction event that devastated non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and marine reptiles. The genus's survival, alongside contemporaries like Dyrosaurus and Brachychampsa, suggests that crocodilians possessed physiological and ecological adaptations uniquely suited to withstand catastrophic environmental upheaval.
