Gabbro is a bold, dark-hued igneous rock with a rough, coarse texture formed deep underground. Packed with plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene, it emerges from the slow solidification of magma rich in magnesium and iron. Unlike its fast-cooled, fine-grained cousin, basalt, gabbro's patient cooling process crafts a strikingly rugged and intense mineral structure.
Mineral Composition of Gabbro
Gabbro is primarily composed of the following minerals:
-
Plagioclase Feldspar: Usually calcium-rich, often occurring as labradorite or bytownite, plagioclase constitutes a major portion of gabbro’s mineral content.
-
Pyroxene: Clinopyroxene, commonly augite, is the most prevalent pyroxene. Orthopyroxene may also occur in certain gabbro varieties.
-
Olivine: Present in some gabbros, particularly in olivine-rich types, though not in all specimens.
-
Accessory Minerals: Minor quantities of hornblende (in hornblende gabbros), biotite, magnetite, ilmenite, and apatite can also be found.
-
Quartz and Feldspathoids: Small amounts of quartz or feldspathoids may occur in specific subtypes, such as quartz gabbros or foid-bearing gabbros.
