Fulgurite is a type of natural glass formed when lightning strikes sandy soil or sand dunes, creating a rare geological phenomenon. The intense heat generated by a lightning bolt fuses the grains of sand, forming fulgurite tubes or branching structures. This formation is also referred to as petrified lightning, fossilized lightning, or lightning rock.

In the Sahara Desert of Algeria, fulgurites can be found due to the region’s extensive sandy terrain and frequent thunderstorms, which provide ideal conditions for their formation. These unique structures can vary in size from small, delicate tubes to larger, intricate branching patterns.

Fulgurites are composed mainly of silica, which is the primary component of sand. When lightning strikes the ground, temperatures can reach up to 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit), causing the sand to melt and fuse rapidly. The resulting fulgurite structures preserve the shape and texture of the surrounding sand grains.
