100 million years old Cretaceous Age.
This Carpopenaeus longirostris fossil shrimp is an exceptional marine fossil dating to the Cretaceous period, roughly 100 million years ago. Preserved within a natural limestone matrix, the specimen retains remarkable detail that reveals the delicate anatomy of an ancient crustacean. These fossil-bearing layers were famously noted by Herodotus, who described marine fossils as “fish in the stones.”
Unlike restored or reconstructed examples, this fossil remains entirely natural, allowing the original preservation to be fully appreciated. Mineralization and compression over millions of years captured the shrimp’s structure, providing valuable insight into prehistoric marine ecosystems.
