Name: Brachylophosaurus

Type: Herbivore

Size: About 9 meters long.

Among the many duck-billed dinosaurs of the Late Cretaceous, Brachylophosaurus stands out for its unusual paddle-shaped skull crest and highly specialized feeding system. Living about 76.5 million years ago, this medium-sized hadrosaur roamed ancient landscapes that are now preserved in the Judith River Formation and the Oldman Formation. Reaching lengths of around 9 meters and weighing up to 7 metric tons, it was a sizeable herbivore adapted to life in rich, plant-filled environments.

Brachylophosaurus possessed long forelimbs and a broader beak than many of its relatives, suggesting it could efficiently crop vegetation. Its specialized cheeks kept food inside the mouth while powerful rows of teeth processed plant material through repeated chewing motions. This sophisticated dental system is unusual among reptiles and highlights how advanced herbivorous dinosaurs became in adapting to plant-based diets.

The distinctive crest, combined with its feeding adaptations, has made Brachylophosaurus one of the most recognizable hadrosaurs known from North American fossil deposits.
