Late Cretaceous through to the Eocene, 100 million to 50 million years ago

Often called the Saber-toothed herring, Enchodus is actually more closely related to salmon. Its teeth are well-suited for gripping small, slippery prey such as fish and squid, and are set in a jaw with a wide opening. These features show that while the teeth were excellent for catching prey, they were not designed to tear off smaller pieces. Instead, after impaling its prey, Enchodus likely used quick, repeated jaw movements to maneuver its body around the catch.
