Oligocene Age 33 - 23 million years ago

The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) is a rare fossil and living conifer, with a lineage tracing back to the age of dinosaurs. Once widespread in prehistoric forests, it was believed extinct until 1944, when living trees were found in central China. A deciduous conifer, it sheds needles annually, preserving traits from its ancient ancestors. Modern Dawn Redwoods are fast-growing ornamental trees reaching 120 feet with a pyramidal form. Fossil specimens provide insight into prehistoric ecosystems, plant evolution, and paleoecology, making them valuable for collectors, museums, and educators.
