Oligocene Age 33 - 23 million years ago

The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) is a prehistoric deciduous conifer that has survived since the age of dinosaurs. Fossil records show that Metasequoia once dominated forests across the Northern Hemisphere, thriving in warm, humid climates for millions of years.

Long considered extinct, this “fossil tree” was known only from fossils until living specimens were discovered in central China in 1944, making it one of the most famous living fossils in botany. Fossil and living trees share the unusual trait of being deciduous, shedding needles seasonally.

Modern Dawn Redwoods are fast-growing trees with pyramidal crowns and straight trunks reaching 120 feet, making them popular as ornamental and landscape trees. Fossil Metasequoia specimens provide insights into prehistoric forests, ancient climates, and plant evolution, offering collectors, educators, and museums a direct connection to Earth’s deep botanical history and the survival of this ancient genus.
