Cretaceous Age 83-70 Million Years Old.
Name: Maiasaura
Type: Herbivore
Size: 9 meters in length.
Maiasaura was a large, herbivorous saurolophine hadrosaurid, commonly known as a “duck-billed” dinosaur, that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 65 to 70 million years ago. In 1978, an extraordinary nesting site was discovered in the Two Medicine Formation near Choteau, Montana, providing the first evidence that dinosaurs cared for their young.
Maiasaura had a short, broad, toothless bill and hundreds of tightly packed teeth in the back of its mouth, ideal for chewing and grinding tough plant material. It possessed a low head with a small bony crest between its eyes and a long, pointed tail. Like other duck-billed dinosaurs, its hind legs were longer than its front limbs, suggesting it could move both bipedally and quadrupedally. It took about seven to eight years for Maiasaura to reach full maturity, growing to around eight meters in length and weighing up to four metric tons.
