Pterosaurs were incredible flying reptiles from the extinct group Pterosauria that thrived throughout the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era, roughly 228 to 66 million years ago. They hold the distinction of being the first vertebrates to master powered flight. Their wings were made of a stretchy membrane of skin, muscle, and tissues extending all the way from their ankles to an impressively long fourth finger. Early pterosaurs had long jaws filled with teeth and lengthy tails, but later species evolved shorter tails and even lost their teeth. Their hollow, air-filled bones, much like birds’, provided lightweight strength and greater muscle attachment. With delicate, paper-thin bone walls, a broad, keeled breastbone for strong flight muscles, and a large brain designed to control complex flying maneuvers, pterosaurs were truly fascinating creatures of the skies.
