Miocene Epoch, 8 Million Years old
Pinnixa galliheri – Pea Crab Fossil
Discovered along California’s central coast, these fossil pea crabs were found in the Monterey Shale, a formation rich in marine fossils south of Monterey Bay. Within a distinct layer dating to about 8 million years ago, exceptionally detailed pea crab fossils are preserved in abundance. Typical of a tropical coastal environment, this layer also contains the remains of fish, pine needles and cones, palm fronds, and several other crab species.
The genus Pinnixa, commonly known as pea crabs, still thrives today. They inhabit the coastal waters from Baja California to the Pacific Northwest and remain abundant throughout the western Pacific Ocean.
