Late Cretaceous, 70 to 66 million years old.
Millions of years ago, the isolated island of Madagascar was home to a powerful predator known as Majungasaurus. This medium-sized carnivorous dinosaur roamed the landscape during the Late Cretaceous period, hunting other animals that shared its prehistoric habitat. Belonging to the Abelisaurid group of theropods, Majungasaurus possessed a thick, muscular skull and strong jaws lined with serrated teeth perfect for cutting through flesh. At around 6 meters long, it was smaller than some giant theropods but still ranked as an apex predator in its environment. The discovery of its fossils near Mahajanga has provided paleontologists with important insights into how dinosaurs evolved in isolation, making Majungasaurus one of the most iconic dinosaurs associated with Madagascar.
