Late Cretaceous, 70 to 66 million years old.

Majungasaurus was a formidable carnivorous theropod dinosaur that lived between 70 and 66 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. Its fossils were discovered in northwestern Madagascar near the region of Mahajanga, providing critical insight into prehistoric life on isolated island landmasses. As a member of the Abelisaurid family, Majungasaurus shared key characteristics with other southern hemisphere predators, including a deep, powerfully built skull and significantly reduced forelimbs.

Reaching lengths of approximately 6 meters (20 feet) and weighing around one tonne, Majungasaurus was a medium-sized but highly specialized predator. Its thick skull was reinforced for strength, supporting strong jaw muscles capable of delivering powerful bites. The teeth were large, serrated, and curved backward—an adaptation ideal for slicing meat and preventing prey from escaping once bitten.

Because Madagascar was geographically isolated during the Late Cretaceous, Majungasaurus evolved distinct anatomical features that set it apart from other theropod dinosaurs found on different continents. Its fossils have made it one of the most thoroughly studied abelisaurids, contributing valuable information about dinosaur evolution in Gondwana and the structure of ancient island ecosystems.
