Late Cretaceous, 70 to 66 million years old.
Majungasaurus was a meat-eating dinosaur that lived near the end of the age of dinosaurs, roaming ancient Madagascar during the Late Cretaceous period. This theropod predator belonged to the abelisaurid group, which was common in southern continents and known for distinctive skull shapes and strong jaws. Growing to about 6 meters long, Majungasaurus was a medium-sized but formidable hunter equipped with serrated teeth designed for cutting meat efficiently. Its fossils, discovered near the town of Mahajanga, have become essential for scientists studying prehistoric life in isolated ecosystems. Because of its unusual anatomy and well-preserved remains, Majungasaurus is frequently featured in museums and educational materials to illustrate dinosaur evolution outside North America and Asia. Its story helps reveal how ancient island environments produced unique and specialized predators.
