Late Cretaceous, 70 to 66 million years old.
Majungasaurus was a carnivorous theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 to 66 million years ago, on the island of Madagascar off the southeastern coast of Africa. This medium-sized predator belonged to the abelisaurid family, a group of theropod dinosaurs known for their deep skulls, muscular necks, and reduced forelimbs. Named after the region near the town of Mahajanga, where its fossils were first discovered, Majungasaurus has become one of the most important dinosaurs for understanding prehistoric life in Gondwana.
Growing to around 6 meters (20 feet) in length and weighing close to one ton, Majungasaurus was a formidable predator within its ecosystem. Its thick, robust skull and powerful jaws were equipped with large, backward-curving serrated teeth designed for slicing flesh and gripping prey. These adaptations suggest it hunted sizeable animals and occupied an apex predator role in Madagascar’s ancient environments. Fossil evidence has made Majungasaurus one of the best-studied abelisaurids, offering valuable insight into dinosaur evolution on isolated landmasses. Today, it remains a popular subject in paleontology, museum exhibits, and educational dinosaur collections worldwide.
