Late Triassic, 237 to 201 million years old.

Postosuchus was a large, carnivorous rauisuchid archosaur that lived during the Late Triassic period (237–201 million years ago). As part of the archosaur clade, it is closely related to the ancestors of crocodiles and dinosaurs. This predator measured about 4–5 meters in length and had a powerful skull equipped with sharp, serrated teeth, allowing it to tear into the flesh of its prey.

Its sturdy, muscular body, strong legs, and long tail made it a fast and agile hunter, capable of ambushing or chasing smaller reptiles and early mammals. Postosuchus exhibited a mix of crocodile-like and dinosaur-like anatomical traits, showcasing the diversity and adaptability of early archosaurs.

Fossils of Postosuchus have been found in North America, in regions that were part of Pangaea during the Late Triassic. These discoveries provide important insights into the ecology and evolutionary history of rauisuchids. As a dominant predator, Postosuchus played a key role in maintaining the balance of its prehistoric ecosystems.
