Albertosaurus, Gorgosaurus, and Daspletosaurus
During the Late Cretaceous period, northern North America was home to apex predators like Albertosaurus, Daspletosaurus, and Gorgosaurus. Fossils are found in the Judith River Formation in Montana and in formations in Alberta, Canada. The Judith River Formation, about 70 million years old, predates the Hell Creek Formation, home to Tyrannosaurus rex, by roughly five million years. These Tyrannosaurs were early relatives of T. rex and smaller than their famous descendant.
Daspletosaurus and Gorgosaurus coexisted at around 30 feet long, weighing up to 5,000 pounds, while Albertosaurus was similar in length but lighter at 4,000 pounds. Teeth from all three species are similar, though Daspletosaurus teeth resemble T. rex more closely, and Albertosaurus teeth are slender and adapted for slicing prey.
These exquisitely preserved Late Cretaceous tyrannosaur fossils and teeth showcase early relatives of T. rex and the diversity of North American apex predators.
