Equicalastrobus are fossilized pine cones that date back to the Eocene epoch, 33–55 million years ago. Found in Morocco’s Western Sahara near Talsine and west of Boujdour, these cones reveal the presence of dense coniferous forests that once dominated the region, supporting diverse plant and animal life.

Preserved through permineralization, Equicalastrobus cones were replaced by minerals such as agate or silica, retaining intricate scale structures and seed chambers. Many specimens also show insect damage, providing insight into ecological interactions during the Eocene. Although the precise species of conifer remains unknown, the cones functioned similarly to modern pine cones, protecting seeds and aiding reproduction, while also serving as food for ancient animals.

These fossils are invaluable to paleobotanists studying plant diversity, forest composition, and climate during the Eocene. They also serve as educational tools and display specimens, illustrating ancient ecosystems and highlighting the complex relationships between plants and their environment. Equicalastrobus petrified pine cones offer a tangible connection to prehistoric Morocco’s forests and its ancient flora.
