Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old
Megalodon, meaning “big tooth,” was a massive extinct shark that lived approximately 23 to 5 million years ago, during the Miocene to Pliocene epochs. One of the largest predators in history, it could reach 15–18 meters in length, nearly three times the size of today’s largest great white sharks, making it a true oceanic giant.
Its enormous, serrated teeth, some up to 18 centimeters long, were perfectly adapted for cutting, crushing, and tearing through whales, large fish, and marine mammals. These teeth, often found fossilized across the world, provide valuable insight into Megalodon’s diet, hunting strategies, and apex predator behavior.
Megalodon thrived in warm coastal waters, continental shelves, and open oceans, with a global distribution evidenced by fossils on every continent. Its powerful body, streamlined for speed, allowed it to ambush prey efficiently and dominate marine ecosystems. For over 13 million years, Megalodon’s presence shaped the balance of prehistoric oceans, regulating populations of large marine animals.
Today, Megalodon teeth and fossils are highly prized by collectors and paleontologists alike. Each specimen offers a tangible glimpse into the prehistoric oceans, showcasing the immense scale, strength, and predatory dominance of one of the most iconic sharks to ever exist.
