Basilosaurus was a prehistoric whale that lived about 40 to 34 million years ago during the Late Eocene Period. It was first discovered in the 19th century in the United States and was mistakenly identified as a giant marine reptile. Because of this mix-up, it was named Basilosaurus in 1834, meaning “king lizard.” Despite the name, it was actually one of the earliest true whales.

This ancient whale was enormous—about 70 feet long and weighing close to 15 tons. To put that in perspective, Basilosaurus was longer than a modern semi-trailer and about as heavy as a cruise ship’s anchor. Its long, slender body made it a powerful swimmer, perfectly suited for life as an ocean predator.

Fossil evidence shows that Basilosaurus was a carnivore with strong jaws lined with sharp, serrated teeth. Scientists estimate it could bite down with a force of nearly 2,300 pounds, making it capable of crushing bones and tearing through flesh with ease.

This tremendous bite force helped Basilosaurus hunt effectively. Paleontologists believe it preyed on large fish, smaller whales, and practically anything else it could catch. As one of the top predators of its time, Basilosaurus ruled the ancient seas with both size and power.
