Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

Megalodon, meaning “big tooth,” was a massive extinct shark that ruled the oceans from 23 to 5 million years ago, during the Miocene to Pliocene epochs. Far larger than any modern shark, Megalodon reached an estimated 15–18 meters in length, nearly three times the size of today’s great white shark, making it one of the largest predators in Earth’s history.

Its enormous, serrated teeth, some reaching 18 centimeters long, were perfectly adapted for gripping, crushing, and slicing through whales, large fish, and marine mammals. These teeth provide key insight into Megalodon’s diet, hunting strategies, and predatory dominance, showing how it maintained its role as the apex predator for over 13 million years.

Megalodon inhabited warm coastal waters, continental shelves, and open oceans worldwide. Fossil evidence from every continent shows a near-global distribution, and its powerful, streamlined body allowed it to ambush prey efficiently and migrate across vast distances. This dominance shaped prehistoric marine ecosystems, regulating populations of large marine animals and influencing the evolution of prey species.

Today, Megalodon fossils—especially teeth—are highly prized by collectors and paleontologists alike. Each specimen offers a direct connection to the oceans’ most formidable prehistoric predator, showcasing the sheer scale, strength, and hunting power of one of history’s most iconic sharks.
