Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old
Megalodon, meaning “big tooth,” was a massive extinct shark that lived between 23 and 5 million years ago, from the Early Miocene to the Pliocene. Known as one of the largest predators in Earth’s history, it far surpassed the size of modern sharks, with estimates reaching 15–18 meters in length—almost three times the size of a great white shark.
Its gigantic, serrated teeth, up to 18 centimeters long, were designed for slicing, crushing, and hunting whales, large fish, and marine mammals. Fossils of these teeth reveal Megalodon’s feeding habits, predatory efficiency, and growth patterns, giving scientists insight into its role as an apex predator.
Megalodon inhabited warm coastal waters, continental shelves, and open oceans worldwide, reflecting a global distribution and the ability to migrate long distances in search of prey. Its dominance shaped prehistoric marine ecosystems for over 13 million years, controlling populations of large marine animals.
Today, Megalodon fossils, particularly teeth, are highly valued by collectors and researchers alike. Each specimen offers a rare glimpse into prehistoric oceans and the incredible scale, power, and dominance of one of the most iconic sharks to ever live.
