Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

Megalodon, or “big tooth,” was one of the most terrifying predators in Earth’s history. Living 23–5 million years ago during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs, Megalodon grew up to 18 meters long and weighed tens of tonnes, making it the undisputed apex predator of prehistoric oceans. Its massive jaws contained hundreds of serrated teeth, some as long as 18 centimeters, perfectly designed to grasp, crush, and slice through whales, large fish, and marine mammals.

Megalodon had a streamlined, muscular body with a powerful tail that provided bursts of speed to ambush prey. Fossil evidence shows it could generate bite forces over 18 tons, making it capable of crushing bone and overpowering even the largest marine mammals of its era. Its sensory adaptations, likely including exceptional vision and smell, allowed it to detect prey across vast distances. Fossils of bite-marked whales suggest a combination of active hunting and opportunistic scavenging, illustrating Megalodon’s dominance in ocean ecosystems.

Today, Megalodon teeth are highly prized by collectors and displayed in museums worldwide. Each tooth provides insight into the shark’s size, predatory efficiency, and evolutionary success. As a prehistoric apex predator, Megalodon remains a symbol of oceanic power, inspiring fascination in paleontology, education, and popular culture.
