Triceratops is a genus of herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaurs that emerged in the Late Cretaceous period, roughly 68 million years ago, weighing between 5 and 9 metric tons. These large, quadrupedal dinosaurs are characterized by three distinct horns and a robust bony frill extending from the rear of their skull. Their disproportionately large skull featured a short neck frill with two prominent supraorbital horns and a smaller nasal horn projecting from the snout. Alongside these primary horns, numerous small spikes lined the edges of the expanded frill. Triceratops coexisted with formidable predators such as Tyrannosaurus rex, likely serving as prey in their shared habitat.
