Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles that lived approximately 145 million years ago, mainly during the Early Jurassic period. Their name, meaning 'fish lizard' in Greek, was given by Mary Anning in England in the early 19th century. The term 'ichthyosaurs' was first introduced by Charles Konig in 1818. During the 19th century, most fossil ichthyosaurs were classified as Ichthyosaurus, a genus with over 50 species by 1900. These creatures were built for speed, paddling with their tails, fins, and short fingers. They were air-breathing predators from the Ichthyosauria group. An Ichthyosaurus was about 6 feet long, weighing around 200 pounds—roughly the size and weight of an adult male human. It possessed numerous tiny, razor-sharp teeth used to hunt fish, its primary diet, and possibly squids prevalent during that era.
