Moldavite is a rare and captivating tektite, a natural glass formed by the intense heat and pressure of a meteorite impact. This extraordinary gemstone originated from the Ries crater in Bavaria, Germany, where a meteorite collision vaporized rock and meteorite material. As molten fragments were ejected into the atmosphere and cooled during their descent, they solidified into the distinctive green moldavite cherished by gemstone collectors, crystal enthusiasts, and jewelry designers.

The primary deposits of moldavite are found along the banks of the Vltava River in Bohemia (Czech Republic). Its green color ranges from pale olive to deep forest green, with unique hues created by trace amounts of iron and other elements during formation.

Moldavite’s physical properties make it easily distinguishable from other gemstones. It exhibits a vitreous luster, varying textures from smooth to pitted or etched surfaces, and a hardness of 5.5–6 on the Mohs scale. One of its most notable features is its low density, allowing for easy identification when weighed against similarly sized stones. Additionally, natural inclusions and bubbles within moldavite reflect its rapid cooling process, adding to its cosmic charm.
