Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites were ancient marine cephalopods easily recognized by their coiled, ribbed shells. They flourished in the world’s oceans from roughly 240 to 65 million years ago before vanishing during the same mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs. The name ammonite is derived from the Greek god Ammon, who was depicted with ram-like horns resembling their spiral shells. Closely related to modern octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, and the nautilus, ammonites were active predators that played an important role in prehistoric marine ecosystems.
