Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are among the most familiar and recognizable fossils, known for their distinctive ribbed, spiral-shaped shells like the one shown above. These marine creatures inhabited the oceans from roughly 240 to 65 million years ago, disappearing alongside the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period. The name ammonite (commonly written in lowercase) comes from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon, whose coiled horns resemble their shells. Ammonites belonged to a group of marine predators known as cephalopods, which also includes their modern relatives—the octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
