Corythosaurus is a genus of hadrosaurid, or “duck-billed,” dinosaurs from the Upper Cretaceous Period, about 80 to 74 million years ago. This range falls within the Campanian age of the Cretaceous Period in the Mesozoic Era. They had hundreds of small, interlocking teeth at the back of their jaws, which helped them crush and grind plant material.
The bony crest on top of their head contained part of the nasal passage and may have been used as a sounding device for communication. Corythosaurus had a long, heavy tail and probably weighed between three and five tons.
The first fossil evidence of Corythosaurus was found in the Judith River Formation, which extends from the Canadian province of Alberta into Montana in the United States, and the dinosaur was formally described in 1914.
