360 million years old.
For millions of years, ammonoids ruled the seas as agile marine predators. Members of the extinct cephalopod subclass Ammonoidea, they first appeared in the Devonian and persisted until the close of the Cretaceous period.
Their defining feature was a coiled external shell divided into buoyancy chambers. As each new chamber formed, the animal sealed off the previous one, creating a lightweight yet strong structure. The internal septa produced intricate suture patterns where they joined the outer shell—designs that evolved from simple zigzag lines in early Goniatites to highly ornate, fern-like motifs in later Ammonites.
Although often compared to modern nautiluses, ammonoids are more closely related to today’s squid and octopus. Their widespread distribution and rapid evolution make them vital index fossils for understanding Mesozoic marine environments.
Ammonoid fossils combine scientific value with natural elegance. Their spiraled geometry and complex sutures capture both evolutionary innovation and the artistic beauty of prehistoric life, making them highly sought after by collectors and researchers alike.
