Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are a fascinating group of marine invertebrates that have inhabited the world’s oceans for hundreds of millions of years. Today, sea urchins can be found in nearly every major marine environment—from polar regions to tropical seas and from shallow coastal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group boasts a vibrant fossil record dating back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly known as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid is derived from the Latin word meaning “pickle.” When alive, these creatures were covered with movable spines that served both as a means of protection and as tools for movement across the seafloor.
