Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that can be found across nearly all major ocean habitats—from polar regions to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group boasts an extensive fossil record dating back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly known as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid comes from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these fascinating creatures were covered with movable spines that offered protection and aided in movement along the seafloor.
