The Woolly Rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) was a large, extinct species of rhinoceros that lived across Europe and northern Asia during the Pleistocene epoch. As a member of the Ice Age megafauna, it thrived in the cold steppe and tundra environments that stretched across much of the continent.
Adult woolly rhinos measured between 9.8 and 12.5 feet in length and could weigh from 4,000 to 6,000 pounds. Their bodies were covered with thick, shaggy fur that protected them from the harsh glacial climates, and they possessed long, curved horns used for foraging through snow, defence against predators, and disputes with other rhinos. Woolly rhinoceroses were herbivores, feeding primarily on grasses and other low vegetation. Fossil evidence shows that they coexisted with other Pleistocene megafauna, including mammoths, bison, and early humans, who may have hunted them.
