Basilosaurus is a prehistoric whale that lived approximately 40 to 34 million years ago, during the Late Eocene Period. It was first discovered in the 19th century in the United States and was originally mistaken for a prehistoric reptile. Because of this early misconception, it was named Basilosaurus in 1834, a name meaning “king lizard.”

Looking at reconstructions of Basilosaurus, it’s easy to see that this ancient whale was immense. It measured around 70 feet in length and weighed approximately 15 tons—longer than a modern semi-trailer and about as heavy as a cruise ship’s anchor.

Basilosaurus was a carnivore, as shown by its sharp, interlocking teeth and powerful jaws. Studies of its skull and jaw structure reveal that it possessed an extraordinarily strong bite force, capable of exerting nearly 2,300 pounds of pressure.

This tremendous power was essential for its hunting lifestyle. Scientists believe Basilosaurus preyed on large fish, smaller whales, and almost any marine animal it could overpower. With its serpentine body and fearsome jaws, it ruled the Eocene seas as one of the top predators of its time.
