Allosaurus was a large carnivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic Period, approximately 150 to 144 million years ago. As one of the dominant predators of its time, it played a key role in shaping Jurassic ecosystems.
Reaching a weight of around two tons, Allosaurus combined strength with agility. Like all theropods, it possessed a long, muscular tail that accounted for roughly half of its total body length, providing essential balance during movement and hunting. Its anatomy was built for active predation, with powerful hind limbs supported by a massive pelvis, enabling strong strides and swift pursuit of prey.
The skull was both lightweight and deadly. It featured a prominent rough ridge just in front of the eyes, as well as rows of large, laterally compressed, sharp, and recurved teeth designed for cutting through flesh. A defining characteristic was the pair of blunt horns located just above and slightly forward of the eyes, giving Allosaurus its distinctive appearance.
Although its forelimbs were shorter than its hind limbs, they remained functional and robust—unlike the much smaller arms seen in later tyrannosaurs. These clawed forelimbs likely helped grasp and secure prey during attacks.
With its two-ton build, balanced body structure, sharp slicing teeth, strong hind legs, and recognizable eye horns, Allosaurus remains one of the most iconic and well-known carnivorous dinosaurs of the Late Jurassic era.
