Strombus bubonius (now often called Persististrombus latus) is a fossil gastropod commonly found in marine terrace deposits in the Mediterranean region of Spain. Its presence indicates warmer water conditions than those currently observed in the region.
Dating these deposits is essential for understanding past sea-level changes and interglacial periods. The U-series nuclide method, specifically Th/U dating, has been applied to Strombus bubonius shells. Although single-shell dates can be unreliable due to the mobility of uranium isotopes, statistical methods have been shown to produce consistent and coherent chronologies in both continental and marine settings.
Studies in the Almeria area of southeastern Spain, using Th and U isotope measurements on Strombus bubonius fossils, have yielded a coherent chronology. These results indicate that Strombus bubonius was present in the Mediterranean basin at the end of the Mindel-Riss interglacial (Oxygen Isotope Stage 7) and during each high sea-level episode of the Riss-Würm interglacial (Oxygen Isotope Stage 5).
