Arizona is internationally recognized as a major source of peridot, the green gemstone variety of olivine, with Gila County standing out as one of the most productive regions. At the heart of this production is Peridot Mesa, a volcanic formation located within the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. This site supplies the majority of peridot mined in the United States and has been central to American peridot production for many decades.

Geologically, Peridot Mesa represents the remnants of an ancient volcanic vent. During eruptions, magma transported fragments of the Earth’s mantle to the surface, including olivine-rich material that crystallized as peridot. These gemstones now occur within basalt flows as individual crystals and clusters, distributed through rock layers that can measure from a few meters to several tens of meters thick. This unique geological setting explains both the abundance and quality of Arizona peridot.

Mining operations on Peridot Mesa are regulated by the San Carlos Apache Tribe, and public access is restricted. Visitors and collectors must obtain a tribal recreation permit from the San Carlos Apache Recreation and Wildlife Department along Highway 70 east of Globe. Most peridot crystals recovered from the area range from 6 to 13 millimeters, making them ideal for gemstone cutting. Beyond its mineral wealth, the mesa is also known for vibrant spring wildflowers, including Mexican goldpoppies, which add seasonal color to the stark volcanic terrain.
