The Ozan Formation, located in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, is renowned for its fossils from the Cretaceous period. Among the varied ancient life remains found there, fish fossils are prominent, including vertebrae and rare jaw specimens like those from Saurodon. These fish fossils suggest the area was marine during the Late Cretaceous epoch, roughly 72.1 to 83.6 million years ago, when seas covered the region. Finds include unidentified fish vertebrae and Saurodon jaws, as well as evidence of fish activity in the form of coprolites, such as spiral fish feces, which reveal information about ancient fish diets and digestion. The preservation of such detailed specimens, including the spiral shape of coprolites, underscores the excellent fossilization conditions of the Ozan Formation.
Please be aware of the nature of fossils:
Being buried underground for millions of years under tons of pressure can be tough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by humans simply to improve their appearance in various ways. Workers in the United States do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are often visible on the surface. These cracks are part of the fossil's natural beauty and are not considered flaws.
