Corythosaurus was a type of hadrosaurid, or “duck-billed,” dinosaur that lived during the Upper Cretaceous Period, roughly 80–74 million years ago, within the Campanian age of the Mesozoic Era. As a plant-eater, it relied on hundreds of tightly packed, interlocking teeth located at the rear of its jaws to efficiently grind and process vegetation.
One of the most recognizable features of Corythosaurus was the large, helmet-like crest that sat atop its skull. This crest housed part of the nasal passage, and scientists believe it may have acted as a sound-amplifying structure, helping the dinosaur communicate through deep calls or resonating vocalizations. Corythosaurus also had a long, muscular tail and is estimated to have weighed between three and five tons as an adult.
Fossils of this dinosaur were first recovered from the Judith River Formation, a well-known fossil site stretching from Alberta, Canada, to Montana, USA. Corythosaurus was officially named and described in 1914, marking it as one of the classic and well-studied hadrosaurs of North America.
