Stegosaurus was one of the many plated dinosaurs that lived during the Late Jurassic Period, around 150 million years ago. It is easily recognized by its spiked tail and the series of large, triangular bony plates running along its back. Despite its size, Stegosaurus had a very small skull and brain. Its forelimbs were much shorter than its hind limbs, giving its back a distinctively arched appearance, and it had short, broad feet.
The dinosaur’s back featured two parallel rows of plates, either staggered or paired, which helped protect its backbone and spinal cord. These rows included 17 to 22 separate plates and flat spines, with the largest plates measuring about 60 centimeters tall and wide. In addition to the back plates, Stegosaurus also possessed long spikes at the end of its tail, likely used for defense against predators.
