Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

Megalodon, whose name means “big tooth,” was a gigantic shark that dominated the world’s oceans from approximately 23 to 5 million years ago, spanning the Early Miocene to the end of the Pliocene. Once considered closely related to today’s great white shark, Megalodon was far larger and more powerful, earning its place as one of the largest predators in Earth’s history.

The earliest known fossils of Megalodon (Otodus megalodon, previously classified as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) date back 20 million years, and for over 13 million years, this apex predator reigned supreme. Estimates suggest Megalodon could grow to an astonishing 15–18 meters long, making it nearly three times the length of the largest great white shark alive today. Its massive teeth, some reaching 18 centimeters, are the key to understanding its incredible size and predatory behavior, as well as its diet, which likely included whales and large fish.

Megalodon’s enormous jaws and serrated teeth made it a fearsome hunter, capable of crushing bones and tearing through the flesh of marine giants. Despite its extinction around 2.6 million years ago, it continues to captivate the imagination, inspiring fascination about what life was like in prehistoric oceans and sparking speculation about the mysteries of the deep. Fossils of this giant shark offer a rare glimpse into the apex predators that ruled ancient seas and stand as a testament to the extraordinary power and scale of prehistoric marine life.
