Cretaceous Age 100.5 - 66 million years old.
Raptors were carnivorous dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 100.5 to 66 million years ago. First discovered by Peter Kaisen in the Gobi Desert on August 11th, 1923, they were named Velociraptor a year later, with the name derived from the Latin words “Velox” (swift) and “Raptor” (robber). Although popularized by the Jurassic Park movies, scientists believe the film’s depiction bears little resemblance to real Velociraptors. The movie’s dinosaurs were based on Deinonychus and not true Velociraptors, which in reality were about the size of a turkey, had feathers, and were not the man-sized reptiles shown in the films. An average Velociraptor weighed around 30 pounds and stood just over 3 feet tall. Contrary to portrayals in the movies, research suggests they weren’t as fast as depicted; most scientists estimate a top speed of around 40 miles per hour—slower than a cheetah or lion but faster than a human, who tops out at 28 mph. Recent studies indicate that Velociraptors hunted small animals and scavenged reptiles, small mammals, insects, and smaller dinosaurs. While movies often show them as aggressive hunters, it’s more likely they were scavengers than active predators.
