Dromaeosaurus was one of the earliest discovered raptor dinosaurs and remains one of the most powerfully built members of the Dromaeosauridae family. Living during the Late Cretaceous period, this small carnivorous dinosaur combined intelligence, speed, and strength into a compact predatory package. Unlike more lightly built raptors, Dromaeosaurus had a short, massive skull and a deep lower jaw filled with large, serrated teeth designed for crushing and tearing flesh.
Discovered in 1914 by Barnum Brown along Alberta’s Red Deer River and formally named in 1922, it was the first dromaeosaur ever described. Its unusually large foot bones and well-developed braincase initially led scientists to believe it was much larger than it truly was. Decades later, it became the defining genus of the dromaeosaur family.
Its stiffened tail, supported by a lattice of bony rods, provided balance while running, yet remained flexible at the base. With large eyes, strong grasping hands, and a hooked toe claw, Dromaeosaurus was likely both an active hunter and an opportunistic scavenger. Its heavily worn teeth suggest it may have crushed bone, distinguishing it from other raptor dinosaurs.
