Fulgurite is nature’s wildest glass, forged when lightning crashes into sandy soil or dunes, sparking an extraordinary geological event. The searing heat from a lightning strike melts sand grains into molten tubes and branching forms. Known as petrified or fossilized lightning, fulgurite captures the raw power of a storm in every piece. Found in the harsh, storm-battered Sahara Desert in Algeria, these striking formations range from fragile, slender tubes to bold, sprawling branches—each one a daring testament to the unstoppable force of nature.
Fulgurites are primarily composed of silica, the main component of sand. When lightning strikes, temperatures can reach up to 30,000 °C (54,000 °F), rapidly melting and fusing the sand. The resulting structures preserve the shape and texture of the original sand grains.
