Cave bears are an extinct species that lived approximately 24,000 years ago. They earned their name because most fossils of this species were discovered in caves. The scientific name, Ursus Spelaeus, derives from the Latin word for cave. Unlike today's bears, cave bears probably spent much of their time inside caves, not only during hibernation. Read on to discover more about these ancient creatures. Like many extinct animals, cave bears attract human curiosity. Their mysterious past, roaming the earth, fascinates many people. Initially, the large skulls and teeth found in cave bear fossils led explorers to think they were dragons. Large skulls deep inside caves often spark imaginations, leading some regions with abundant cave bear fossils to be called “dragon caves.” Despite their size and formidable teeth, scientists believe cave bears were mainly herbivores. While they might have been omnivorous at times, their primary diet consisted of tough plants, as analysis of their teeth suggests.
