Galena stands as the most prevalent lead-bearing mineral, recognized throughout history for its significance. It typically forms well-defined crystals exhibiting a variety of distinct morphologies. Certain cubic crystals display edges truncated by partial octahedral development, while some octahedral crystals have their vertices flattened due to cubic growth. Numerous specimens reveal features intermediate between cubic and octahedral forms. Additionally, partial dodecahedral growth can appear within octahedral or cubic-octahedral crystals, producing complex and intriguing crystal geometries.

Galena is the source mineral from which most lead minerals, like Cerussite and Anglesite, arise as secondary forms. Its cleavage can be boldly altered by impurities such as silver and bismuth. When bismuth is present, Galena may show striking octahedral cleavage, while silver can cause the mineral to crack into flaky, slightly curved fragments, giving it a daring and unique character.
