Epidote is a calcium-aluminum-iron silicate mineral known for its distinctive pistachio-green color and glassy brilliance. Commonly found in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss, epidote forms elongated, sharply defined prismatic crystals that showcase excellent luster and structure. Its chemical formula, Ca₂(Al, Fe)₃(SiO₄)₃(OH), reflects a complex silicate framework enriched with iron.
The mineral’s color spectrum ranges from bright yellow-green to dark green and nearly black, depending on iron concentration. Ranking 6 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, epidote is durable enough for use in jewelry and decorative carvings while maintaining its polish and shine.
Often associated with quartz veins and feldspar-rich formations, epidote is highly sought after by mineral collectors, lapidary artists, and gemstone buyers. Beyond decorative uses, it also plays a role in ceramic production and has been utilized as a minor iron ore in certain geological settings.
Its vibrant hue, structural clarity, and moderate hardness make epidote both scientifically significant and visually captivating.
