Elrathia Kingi Trilobite

Trilobites are an extinct group of marine arthropods belonging to the class Trilobita and are among the earliest arthropods known to science. Their first appearance in the fossil record, during the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period about 521 million years ago, marks the emergence of some of the planet’s earliest complex life forms. These creatures possessed hard, mineralized exoskeletons, which made them highly fossilizable and left a rich record in ancient seas.

The name “trilobite” derives from their three-lobed body plan, consisting of a central axial lobe flanked by two symmetrical pleural lobes. Trilobites’ anatomy is further divided into three main regions:

  1. Cephalon (head): Houses eyes, sensory structures, antennae, and mouthparts.

  2. Thorax (middle): Comprised of 2 to 61 overlapping segments, allowing flexibility and defensive movement.

  3. Pygidium (tail): Formed from fused segments at the rear of the body.

These remarkable animals thrived long before dinosaurs, serving as iconic representatives of Paleozoic marine ecosystems and remaining highly prized among fossil collectors worldwide.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in the United States do a very professional job, unearthing and preserving these natural treasures
